How to Edit a 15-Second Story Video

The 4 Stages of the Content Factory

What Is a 15-Second Story Video?

A 15-second story video is a short, vertical-format clip designed for Instagram Stories, Facebook Stories, YouTube Shorts, and TikTok. These micro-videos capture a single idea, moment, or tip in a format optimized for mobile viewers who scroll quickly. In the Content Factory workflow, 15-second stories are repurposed from longer pillar content—taking the most compelling moments from interviews, tutorials, or presentations and trimming them into bite-sized clips.

Editing a 15-second story is a key skill in Stage 2 – Process of the Content Factory. By creating multiple story clips from a single long-form video, you multiply your content output and reach audiences who prefer short-form platforms.

Where 15-Second Stories Fit in the Content Factory

Story editing belongs to Stage 2 – Process, alongside one-minute video editing and audiogram creation. The raw footage comes from Stage 1 (Produce), and the finished stories move to Stage 3 – Post for distribution across social platforms. Stories are particularly effective in Stage 4 – Promote when boosted with the Dollar a Day strategy.

Prerequisites

Before editing a 15-second story, ensure you have: access to the BlitzMetrics Descript account, a transcribed pillar content video in your Descript project, and familiarity with the basic one-minute video editing workflow. You should also know the target platform’s specifications—Instagram Stories use 1080×1920 pixels (9:16 aspect ratio).

Step-by-Step Process

Step 1 – Identify the Best 15-Second Moment

Open your transcribed pillar content in Descript and read through the transcript. Look for a single compelling statement, tip, or story beat that can stand alone in 15 seconds. The best moments have a clear beginning and end, deliver immediate value, and make the viewer want to learn more.

Step 2 – Select and Trim the Clip

Highlight the text in the transcript that corresponds to your chosen moment. Descript will automatically select the matching video. Trim the selection down to exactly 15 seconds or less. If the moment runs slightly long, remove filler words or tighten pauses to fit within the time limit.

Step 3 – Adjust the Aspect Ratio to 9:16

Change the canvas dimensions to 1080×1920 pixels for vertical video. In Descript, go to your project settings or canvas size options and select the 9:16 ratio. Reposition the speaker or subject within the frame so they are centered and visible.

Step 4 – Add Captions

Enable captions or subtitles since most story viewers watch without sound. Descript generates captions automatically from the transcript. Style the captions with a readable font, appropriate size, and contrasting background. Position them in the lower third of the frame so they do not obscure the speaker’s face. For detailed instructions, see How to Add Captions to a Video Using Descript.

Step 5 – Add a Hook or Title Card

The first one to two seconds of a story must grab attention. Add a text overlay or title card at the very beginning with a hook like a question, bold statement, or topic label. This encourages viewers to keep watching rather than swiping to the next story.

Step 6 – Apply Transitions and Effects

If your story has multiple quick cuts, apply simple transitions between them. For a 15-second clip, keep transitions minimal—a quick fade or cut is usually sufficient. See How to Add Video Transitions in Descript for details on available effects.

Step 7 – Export the Story

Export the video at 1080×1920 resolution in MP4 format. Ensure the file size is under 30 MB for Instagram Stories or under the limit for your target platform. Save the exported file to the appropriate folder in Google Drive so it is ready for the posting team.

Verification Checklist

Before delivering the story, confirm: the video is 15 seconds or shorter, the aspect ratio is 9:16 (vertical), captions are present and readable, the hook or title card appears in the first two seconds, audio levels are consistent, and the file has been saved to the correct Google Drive folder.

Platform Specifications at a Glance

Instagram Stories: 1080×1920, up to 15 seconds per story slide, MP4, under 30 MB. Facebook Stories: Same as Instagram. YouTube Shorts: 1080×1920, up to 60 seconds, MP4. TikTok: 1080×1920, up to 10 minutes, but 15-second clips perform best for repurposed content.
