How to Add Video Transitions in Descript

The 4 Stages of the Content Factory

What Are Video Transitions in Descript?

Video transitions are visual effects applied between scenes or clips that create smooth, professional-looking changes from one segment to the next. In Descript, transitions help your edited videos flow naturally—whether you are cutting between interview segments, switching topics in a tutorial, or moving from a title card into your main content. Rather than jarring hard cuts, transitions guide the viewer’s eye and signal that something new is coming.

Adding transitions is one of the final polish steps in the Process stage of the Content Factory. Once you have trimmed your clips, removed filler words, and arranged your timeline, transitions give your one-minute videos and longer edits the professional feel that keeps viewers watching.

Where Video Transitions Fit in the Content Factory

Transitions sit squarely in Stage 2 – Process. After raw footage has been uploaded and transcribed, your editing workflow in Descript includes trimming, arranging scenes, adding transitions, and exporting the final cut. This polished video then moves to Stage 3 – Post, where it gets embedded on a web page or cross-posted to social platforms.

Prerequisites

Before adding transitions, make sure you have completed these steps: you are logged into the BlitzMetrics Descript account, your raw video has been uploaded to Google Drive and imported into a Descript project, and you have already edited your one-minute video so the timeline is trimmed and arranged in the correct order.

Step-by-Step Process

Step 1 – Open Your Descript Project

Launch Descript and open the project that contains your edited video. Make sure the timeline view is active so you can see each scene or clip laid out sequentially.

Step 2 – Position Your Playhead at the Cut Point

Click on the boundary between two clips in the timeline. This is the edit point where you want to insert a transition. You will see a small divider or gap between the two scenes.

Step 3 – Open the Transitions Panel

Navigate to the transitions menu. In Descript, you can access transitions by right-clicking the cut point or by using the toolbar. Look for options such as Cross Dissolve, Dip to Black, Wipe, or Slide. Descript offers a wide variety of built-in transition effects.

Step 4 – Select and Apply a Transition

Choose the transition style that best fits your content. For most Content Factory videos, a simple Cross Dissolve or Dip to Black works well—it looks professional without being distracting. Click or drag the transition onto the cut point to apply it.

Step 5 – Adjust Duration and Properties

After applying the transition, open the properties panel to customize the duration. A typical transition lasts 0.5 to 1.0 seconds. Shorter transitions feel snappier, while longer ones create a more cinematic feel. Preview the transition by playing through the cut point to ensure it looks right.

Step 6 – Repeat for All Cut Points

Go through your entire timeline and add transitions at each cut point where a smooth changeover is needed. Not every cut requires a transition—sometimes a hard cut is more effective, especially for fast-paced content or when the scene change is minor.

Step 7 – Preview and Export

Play through the entire video from start to finish to check that all transitions look natural. Once satisfied, export your video in the appropriate format and resolution for your target platform.

Verification Checklist

Confirm the following before moving on: transitions are applied at all intended cut points, each transition duration is between 0.5 and 1.0 seconds, the video plays smoothly with no jarring jumps, audio does not clip or overlap awkwardly at transition points, and the exported file meets the resolution and format requirements for the target platform.

Common Transition Types and When to Use Them

Cross Dissolve is the most versatile transition—use it for general scene changes in interviews or tutorials. Dip to Black works well for separating major sections or creating a pause. Wipe transitions add energy and work for upbeat or promotional videos. Slide transitions create a directional movement that suggests progression. For most Content Factory one-minute videos, keep it simple with Cross Dissolve or Dip to Black.
