Editing videos is one of the worst parts of content creation. Nobody really wants to do it. Some of us have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars hiring video editors over the years just to avoid it.
But there’s a tool that’s changing all of that.

Descript has become what many are calling the Swiss Army knife of video editing. It started with overdub and studio sound, then expanded to removing filler words, chopping content into social media snippets, publishing blog posts, and so much more.

For creators who are constantly on the go, meeting clients, driving around, recording podcasts, there’s tons of video piling up. Video that used to get shipped off to an editor in another country. Descript brings all of that editing power into one place.
AI agents are changing everything
Here’s where it gets interesting. AI agents are now like people. They use the tools so you don’t have to.

Instead of learning where to click every time a UI changes, agents like Descript’s Underlord are logging into WordPress, Google Docs, CRMs, and doing the work.

Nobody wants to sit there editing files in Premiere or After Effects. And now you don’t have to.
The Underlord API
Within the past 30 to 45 days, Descript released an API that lets you take actions outside of the app. You can import and edit from a command line, and more endpoints are coming for advanced editing workflows.

This means you can integrate Descript into your broader workflow, connecting it to your knowledge base, your business processes, and your entire content pipeline from filming to publishing.
You don’t need to be technical
You don’t need to go into the matrix or learn the command line. The most important skill is how you communicate to AI.

Whether it’s an agent, an LLM, or any tool, clarity matters most. If you can clearly articulate what you’re looking for as an end result, you’re going to succeed. These tools are only getting smarter and more actionable.
Getting started in 3 steps

1. Go to web.descript.com and create an account.

2. Start bringing your content in.

3. Use the AI agent Underlord to start editing.
Talk to Underlord the same way you’d talk to ChatGPT or Claude. Like a friend or colleague. The more context you provide, the better the results.
Creating social clips
There are two ways to create clips in Descript.
First, use templates. There’s a saved Underlord prompt called Create Social Clips built exactly for this purpose.

Second, just type what you want. “Generate me five social clips of a certain duration around X, Y, Z subject between myself and my co-host.” Descript’s speaker detection tool makes it easy to isolate specific speakers and create clips based on who’s talking.
You can literally ask the tool how to use the tool.
The filler word problem
One of the most loved features is filler word removal. Remove all the ums and ahs with one click.

Get rid of background noise.

For anyone who records regularly, this is the first button you click when you’re done with a recording.
Descript vs. Adobe Suite and other tools
Professional comes down to what your end product is. Adobe has great products. Other tools exist at conferences like NAB.
But Descript shines with narrative content. Because of transcript-based editing, anything with spoken word or narrative focus is where Descript excels. You edit text, and the video follows.
Tools like Opus Clip focus on clipping. Descript does clipping too, along with remote recordings, AI editing, and a full suite of production features. It’s a holistic editor.
At the end of the day, what matters most is using the tool that works best for what you’re trying to create.
What’s next for Descript
The biggest focus for 2026 is the API. Keeping an eye on what Descript is doing with API capabilities and what’s coming next is extremely important this year.
Whether you’re inside the tool using Underlord or outside the tool using the API, leveraging AI editing agents to get to something faster is the focus going forward.
Descript was started by Andrew Mason, the creator of Groupon.

What began as a podcasting tool has evolved into a full video editing platform powered by AI. For creators, agencies, and anyone producing content regularly, the message is simple. Get your content into Descript, talk to Underlord, and let the AI do the heavy lifting.
