During my trip to Las Vegas with Dennis Yu, I had the chance to meet Dan Ulin, founder of Elite Student Coach, and it ended up being one of the real highlights of the trip.
From the first conversation, Dan stood out. He has a way of commanding a room without ever being loud about it. His confidence is quiet but strong, and it is paired with a real kindness that makes you want to lean in and learn from him. Right away he made a point to connect with me personally, talking about how beautiful my home state of West Virginia is. That simple moment left an impression. It showed the kind of person he is — someone who notices the good in people and places, and takes the time to say it.
Dan’s background is impressive too. After graduating from Duke University, he built a career around helping students grow into their full potential. Through Elite Student Coach, he is helping students do more than just get into great schools. He is helping them become better leaders, better communicators, and more self-aware human beings.
We ended up spending a lot of time together throughout the trip — sharing meals, swapping stories, even doing the FlyOver ride together where we “flew” over Iceland. Those shared experiences made it even clearer who Dan really is. Someone who cares about people. Someone who leads by example. Someone who is serious about his mission but never too busy to slow down and really connect.
Spending time with Dan showed me what real leadership looks like. Confidence without arrogance. Success without forgetting where you came from. I am grateful I got the chance to meet him and even more grateful for what I learned just by being around him for a few days.
