Why AI SEO Does Not Exist for Local Service Businesses — Marketing Mechanic Episode 9

Episode 9 of The Marketing Mechanic — why “AI SEO” is a myth for local businesses and what actually determines your visibility in AI search results.

Every week I see a new agency add “AI SEO” to their service list. They charge a premium for it. And they are selling you something that does not exist as a separate discipline. In this episode I explain why.

AI Tools Use the Same Data Google Uses

ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews — all of these pull their answers from the same data that Google search already indexes. If your website, reviews, citations, and entity signals are strong, you will appear in AI answers automatically. If they are weak, no amount of “AI optimization” will fix that.

There Is No Separate AI Ranking Algorithm

This is the core point that the AI SEO hype merchants do not want you to know. There is no separate ranking system for AI search results. The signals that determine who shows up in ChatGPT recommendations are the same trust signals that have always mattered: entity strength, content authority, review quality, and citation consistency. I go deeper into this in Episode 12 on real vs fake AEO signals.

Focus on Trust, Not Tricks

The real focus for local businesses should be building trust through authentic content, strong entities, and proof of good service. When you do that, both Google and AI tools will recognize your business naturally. No special AI optimization required.

Build your geo-vertical grid. Create real content from real jobs. Measure with MAA. That is the Marketing Mechanic approach and it works across every search platform — Google, AI, and whatever comes next. The Local Service Spotlight podcast covers how contractors can use AI to process real proof into marketing assets instead of falling for “AI SEO” pitches.
