Answer Engine Optimization — AEO — is the hottest buzzword in marketing right now. Every agency is adding it to their pitch deck. But after auditing dozens of AEO offerings, I can tell you that most of what is being sold under this label is fake.
What AEO Actually Is
AEO is the practice of optimizing your content so that AI systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews reference your business when answering user questions. The promise is real — if someone asks ChatGPT for a plumber recommendation in Houston, you want your business mentioned.
But here is what the hype merchants do not tell you: the signals that determine who shows up in AI answers are the same signals that have always mattered in Google search. Entity strength. Content authority. Trust signals. Citation consistency. There is no separate AI ranking algorithm that requires a separate AI optimization strategy.
Real vs Fake AEO Signals
Real signals: A strong Google Knowledge Panel. Consistent entity data across the web. Authoritative content that demonstrates expertise. Positive reviews mentioning specific services. A well-structured website that search engines can easily parse.
Fake signals: Schema markup tricks that try to game AI systems. Keyword-stuffed FAQ pages designed for AI extraction. Paid placements on AI training data sites. Custom prompt engineering for ChatGPT. None of these work consistently because AI systems are designed to filter manipulation.
If You Win at SEO, You Win at AEO
This is the core message of this episode: if you build your entity properly, create authentic content, and establish real authority in your vertical and geography, you will show up in AI answers automatically. There is no separate strategy needed.
The agencies selling AEO as a separate service are repackaging basic SEO work at a premium price. Do not pay for AI optimization on top of what should already be part of your digital marketing foundation.
