What MOF Means
MOF stands for Marketing, Operations, Finance. It is the business functions triangle in the 9 Triangles framework, sitting in the WHAT tier as one of five business triangles. MOF ensures that every organization covers the three essential departments that keep a business running. No matter how small or large your company is, every activity falls into one of these three functions.
The Three Functions
Marketing is responsible for generating demand — making the phone ring. This is where you create content, run advertising, build your brand, and attract customers. Within the 9 Triangles, marketing is where GCT (Goals, Content, Targeting), ACC (Awareness, Consideration, Conversion), MAA (Metrics, Analysis, Action), and Dollar a Day live. The Content Factory (Produce, Process, Post, Promote) is the systematic approach to marketing execution.
Operations is responsible for fulfilling that demand — delivering the service, managing teams, running processes, and maintaining quality. This is where DDD (Do, Delegate, Delete), CID (Communicate, Iterate, Delegate), and LDT (Learn, Do, Teach) live. Operations is the engine that turns marketing promises into delivered results. Without strong operations, marketing generates demand that cannot be fulfilled.
Finance is responsible for measuring and managing the money — tracking revenue, managing costs, ensuring profitability, and funding growth. Finance determines whether your marketing efforts are generating positive returns and whether your operations are cost-effective. Without financial discipline, a business can grow its marketing and operations while losing money on every transaction.
How MOF Works
MOF ensures that your marketing efforts are operationally feasible and financially sustainable. A common failure pattern is investing heavily in marketing (generating leads and awareness) without having the operations to fulfill orders or the financial controls to know whether each customer is profitable. MOF forces you to think about all three functions together rather than optimizing one at the expense of the others.
Where MOF Fits in the 9 Triangles
MOF is one of the five business triangles in the WHAT tier. Think of MOF as the organizational container — the other eight triangles are the specific principles you apply within Marketing, Operations, and Finance to run your business effectively. The three marketing triangles (GCT, ACC, MAA) map to the Marketing function. The other business triangles (DDD, CID, LDT, CCS) map primarily to the Operations function. And the Standards of Excellence provide the financial metrics and benchmarks that drive the Finance function. All of these serve the mission of SBP (Specialist, Business, Partner) at the top of the pyramid.
